Garden Power Tools-Garden Power Machinery Versus Garden Hand Tools

The strimmer is a modern replacement for the scythe, but it is far more versatile at cutting rough grass and weeds. Being electrically operated, or gas-operated, makes this garden power tool an easier one to use. Powerful wheel-mounted brush woodcutters are available for a large garden. Be sure to wear eye and ear protection and cover the skin against pesticides, aerosols, contaminants, and flying sticks and rocks and brush.

String Trimmer, Brush Woodcutter, Or Scythe – !

For ease of use and versatility, our Strimmers (As defined by Wikipedia: “A string trimmer, also known as a strimmer, line trimmer, weed whacker, weed whip, weed eater, weedy, or whipper-snipper, is a powered handheld device that uses a flexible monofilament line instead of a blade for cutting grass and other plants near objects. It consists of a cutting head at the end of a long shaft with a handle or handles and sometimes a shoulder strap“), win over a scythe.

Evaluate the job you need to perform carefully before you grab the closest garden power tool and make a mess that has to be redone in a few short days.

It is our opinion that the Strimmers with their degrees of varying weights, ease of use and power options and efficiency in covering a large area in a short time span really benefit the user in terms of saved time.

Short or long, big or small hedge and cutting jobs are done in a fraction of the time spent with hand tools.

But for a truly professional and manicured look to your shrubs and hedges, garden hand tools are nearly impossible to beat – Unless you are a landscape professional and skilled in the use of Garden Power Tools.

If you are primarily a weekend warrior gardener and home landscaper then do some research on single-sided String Trimmer models – They rate higher safety marks for less skilled users. Varieties and Brands are diverse, they range from gas to corded, or electric and battery and suit garden power tool jobs from ground level to tall pole options.

Garden Power Tools Brush Cutters can handle nearly any outdoor job. They are heavier than Strimmers, but they are balanced for easier operation and to help give garden power tool operators a welcome lifting break!

Our favorites are the Ryobi and Stihl Brands, because some of the others like Black and Decker and Husqvarna don’t have as many features we like – a new touch start system for instance on the Ryobi, and several added free accessories (free hedge trimmer attachment, free extension shaft, . . . ) on the better Stihl models.

Scythe-Grass Whip – Sickle -
This is one Garden Hand Tool that truly compliments Garden Power Tools for the finishing touch to your lawn and garden areas. Fiskars has an excellent Brush Axe that works for a variety of garden and yard tasks.

We love the Fiskars 7860 Brush Axe for its comfortable handle, light weight, perfect length blade (9 inches), the drop-forged steel blade for a long life, and multi-task capabilities.

Longer handled scythes work better for bad backs if you have a lot of ground level work to do, but you may compromise on preciseness with the blade being further away, or you may not. Decide which garden power tool is best for you personally based on your specific or special needs.

Garden Power Tools Lawn Edgers or Flat Shovel (Spade)

Lawn Edger

Garden powered edging tools are useful for gardens and lawns with a lot of lawn edging. These garden power tools turn hours of hand edging into easy tasks.

They are especially useful for people on the go, and people who can’t do the bending and kneeling required for smooth and accurate lawn edging with hand tools.

Beware of heavier garden power tool models if you have extensive edging and have to carry your garden power tool for very long.

Check for balanced weight proportions on product reviews and product descriptions.

A range of edging tool types is available, from gas engine to cordless and electric types.

Gardening Shovels: Look for a long handled, flat edged gardening shovel or Spade to make a nice, even, clean edging cut by hand, cut away from the edge approximately 1 inch with your shovel or spade and make this same edge cut all along the edge you want to trim.

Pull away the yard or garden debris from your cut and compost it.

Hand weeding is often required with hand edging or even garden power tool edging, but the manicured looking results are well worth the time.

Having experienced both, we prefer edging with a garden power tool.

Garden Power Tools November Maintenance Tips

November Garden Power Tools Tips on Tool Maintenance

Get Tools Ready For Next Season – Sharpen Up!

Garden Power Tools just makes garden and home improvements, repairs and maintenance so much easier. You use these garden power tools for all kinds of home and garden projects, so take care of them when you don’t use them too!

These November maintenance and care tips for your garden power tools keeps your equipment safe for you and protected from the destructive elements of wear, rust and weather.

While they’re relatively easy to use, garden power tools still need regular maintenance. Regularly scheduled and yearly maintenance saves you time AND money in the long run. It also keeps your garden power tool equipment revved up when you need them!

Valuable tool Sharpening Advice

A little November Garden Power Tools Maintenance gives your next season  . . . “VAARROOOOM!” not . . . “Splutter, Splutter, . . Cough, . . . Cough!”

Chain Saw Maintenance and Care Tips -

Make sure working areas around or near operation and storage of your Chain Saw are relatively free of dirt and debris. This way your Chain Saw will keep running smoothly, run efficiently and run without overheating caused from clogs.

Toothpicks, or a paperclip unbent to form a straight line work great to clear blocked fuel cap vents. Simply using a strong tap against a hard surface is especially useful to knock away dirt. For mesh filters, try using a screwdriver to take the filter apart. Once it is in sections, go ahead and wash it with regular soap and water. Make sure you wait to put it back together again until after all the pieces have dried completely.

To clean clogged mufflers, first disconnect your spark plug. Next, drain your fuel tank and then you can remove the muffler cover with a screwdriver. Now is your chance to check for damage and make sure all screws are tight. Use a wire brush to get rid of debris.

Calibrate your carburetor last. Adjust and sharpen the chain on your saw when needed, for an even cut.

Garden Tiller Maintenance and Care Tips:

Getting dirty and beating through garden dirt chunks is why Garden Tiller exists! So, to start with, always take a minute when you are finished to wipe down your Garden Tiller every time you use it.

To prevent stalling and erratic operation, clean your fuel tank and air filter regularly.

Tap paper filters against a hard surface to break up and loosen dirt. Other filter styles are easily washed with tap water and a mild detergent. Let filters dry completely before re-installing them. Top keep your Garden Tiller running frequently, clear the blocked areas on the fuel tank cap vents. For optimal adjustments, consult your user manual for your specific garden tiller brand and model.

Hedge Trimmer Maintenance and Care Tips:

Before you store your Hedge Trimmer for the winter, use a clean, dampened with machine oil cloth and wipe down hedge trimmer blades. use this time to sharpen blades. Sharpen blades yourself with a smooth, metal file, or have it done – Many lawn and garden stores offer this service for a reasonable price. Keep in mind that trimming those hedges in the Spring with dull blades is a true pain in the butt. To keep your electrical current flowing steadily, inspect the brush assemblies located on each side of the rotary electrical switch (commutator).

To test brush assembly springs, use needle-nosed pliers to lift out each brush assembly and press each one – replace brush assembly springs if needed. Make sure motor bearings are lubricated. To remove dust from the motor and fan, use a non-invasive tool similar to a toothbrush, or small bristle brush. To prevent dull or dirty blades, lubricate and clean them. When should you use a Hedge Trimmer in a wet or damp environment — Never!

Lawn Mower Maintenance and Care Tips:

Regularly check your Lawn Mowers oil level and quality (color). For those four-stroke engines, drain and refill the crankcase after a good twenty-five hours of use. There should always be fresh fuel in the tank (You risk contaminated gas by letting it sit in the engine for extended periods).

Make sure you consult your owner’s manual for specific care instructions for your specific Lawn Mowers make and model – especially your engine controls – Including carburetor calibration. To prevent losing power, running sporadically, or not starting at all, clean your air and fuel filters regularly.

Remove grass clumps and clippings on the Lawn Mowers after you are done mowing. A water hose works great on full spray to help loosen and remove stubborn clumps of grass and dirt. Let Lawn Mowers stand and dry – Store dry, not wet.

Power Drills Maintenance and Care Tips:

Always keep drill bits sharp. Sharpen or replace Power Drills bits when needed. Using a drill bit for a long period of time means that you’ll want to let it cool down in order to avoid over-heating. Blowing compressed air on air vents not only helps keep your motor clean, but it also keeps air vents open and clean and reduces over-heating too. A toothbrush helps remove stuck-on, dirt from the engine’s fan. To store your drill, wipe it down first with a clean, cloth you dampen with a home detergent. Using a light oil cover to coat metal drill surfaces and a soft cloth keeps these surface areas clean. Keep cordless Power Drills battery packs charged up for future use.

String Trimmer Maintenance and Care Tips:

Before you start or store your String Trimmers, clean off any stuck-on dirt and yard and/or brush clippings from the deflector using a stiff brush (we use a stick sometimes, but this is not recommended for safety reasons). Drain all remaining fuel into a metal container at least ten feet away (approximately 3 yards) from your work area before you store or repair your String Trimmers.

Snow Blower Maintenance and Care Tips:

Adjust the Snow Blower carburetor according to your owner’s manual for your specific make and model. Fill the tank with only clean fuel. Oil levels should be maintained correctly for each use. If your Snow Blower has a four-cycle engine, check the oil level often, and drain and refill the crankcase for every twenty-five hours of use. Keeping your Snow Blowers parts clean and in repair is the best break-down prevention around. This includes engine cooling fins, fuel filter, and fuel tank cap vents.

After you finish clearing your walkway or driveway, and turn off your Snow Blower, be sure to disconnect the spark plug and brush away any clinging snow from the discharge chute, auger assembly and housing. Always store your Snow Blower dry. An easy way to do this is simply to start it up and let it run for a bit, so that all remaining snow goes away. Turn it off, disconnect your spark plug, close the fuel shutoff valve and take out your key. Always store your Snow Blower in a clean, dry place.

Always, Always, Always refer to your Garden Power Tools owner/user manual for specific instructions on maintenance for your specific garden power tool or machine and model. You could even hang out at your local neighborhood power tool store for a couple of questions on maintenance – Just don’t be a pest, that’s how they make a living and they don’t have time to review a complete maintenance system for you. You can also take a local class in your nearby hardware store or community college – Check your parks and rec., for classes on garden power tools repairs and maintenance too!

Don’t wait for a break down to take care of any garden power tool with regular maintenance and yearly checks. This simple step will save you money fast with garden power tools that will work for years to come!

Garden Power Tools – OCTOBER HOME GREENHOUSE – Building Tips

October is the Perfect Month to Get your home greenhouse plans set up and get ready to build!

With your own home greenhousehome greenhouse, you can grow your own!  Not only will you reap the rewards of your own harvest, but the varieties you can create are – virtually – limitless!  Store bought seeds come in many varieties, plus they are expensive to buy.
home greenhousehome greenhousehome greenhousehome greenhouse
Building your own home greenhousehome greenhouse gives you options that you may not have had, especially  if you ran out of planting seeds last year, or had no room to grow them before now.

Building your home greenhouse requires knowing:

  • Do you need a small greenhouse or a different type of greenhouse?
  • What do you want to grow in your home greenhouse?

- Starting seedlings indoors requires less room than growing full-size vegetables, so maybe you only want to invest in some lights for indoors and a coldframe structure versus a full greenhouse (Coldframe – Any structure used to protect plants from the weather).

But if you want to grow vegetables, you could probably get by with a tunnel (hoop house) greenhouse shaped from plastic and PVC pipe that sits over your growing rows.

Having a home greenhouse

- The bigger the better – Gives your garden the space it needs, gives you the opportunity to experiment more with seedlings and varieties, and  a home greenhouse is just plain useful for most Fall through Spring garden growing.

Size Matters – How Big Should You Build Your Home Greenhouse?

There are all sizes, ranging from tent size for light to customize-able sizes.  Standard Home Greenhouse size ranges from 4 x 6 feet wide, 6-8 feet long and 6 feet tall.  Determine your needs, measure necessary growing space required and start building your home  greenhouse.  Once your finished building your home greenhouse you can almost immediately begin planting your seeds.

Keep in mind weather conditions where you live.  A sturdier home greenhousehome greenhouse will be needed in colder, rougher climates and are probably best covered with plastic.

Larger home greenhouses normally have small greenhouse fanshome greenhouse inflating a second plastic layer on the outside – Make sure you have the necessary power available where you are building your home greenhouse.  These second plastic layer on home greenhouses are higher maintenance and normally need to have the outer plastic layer replaced every 3-5 years, depending on climate and notable weather conditions.

Many garden greenhouse owners only use their greenhouse in April and May, so they use smaller greenhouse sizes that utilize polycarbonite materials.

For a more effective growing experience in your greenhouse, you may want to consider  a ‘twin wall’ system – with 2 air space layers between the walls.

Greenhouse coverings are called wall glazings.  For better insulation, but a bit more money, invest in a greenhouse with triple wall glazings – their cross sections look like a honeycomb.

Polycarbonite materials are bendable, but solid and can be stretched over a hoop greenhouse frame.  Although they are flexible, they can also be used for straight wall sheets.  They are cost effective because their materials last for 15-20 years before they need to be replaced.

Make sure you get greenhouse wall glazings made specifically for and not standard plastic for your greenhouse.

Greenhouse plastic is specially made to protect your seedlings, plants and vegetables for healthy growing.  Regular plastic yellows and the amount of light coming through is reduced.  These special wall glazings are treated on the outside to resist sun UV rays.  they are treated on the inside too, so that condensation build up and dripping is reduced from greenhouse humidity.

The ideal home greenhouse for looks are glass greenhouseshome greenhouse – especially if they will visually compliment your home.  Although they are more expensive home greenhouses to build, they are more attractive if you are building them close to or against your home.

These home greenhouses can and will probably last for as long as you are in your home.  Be sure to use a twin glass wall with glass greenhouse structures – Giving your greenhouse the efficiency of home energy-efficient windows.

Greenhouse kits work great for those of you who aren’t a handy with Construction and Power Tools.  But you’ll still want to have the basic Garden Power Tools on hand for the building process.

Greenhouse accessories like and benches can be hand constructed also, and accessories like heaters and fans can be bought right HERE.

Garden Power Tools Recommends these Tools List To Build Your  Home Greenhouse:

  1. Shovelhome greenhouse

  2. Power Drillhome greenhouse

  3. Socket Sethome greenhouse or Wrencheshome greenhouse

  4. Caulking Gunhome greenhouse

  5. Hand Power Sawhome greenhouse

  6. Hammerhome greenhouse

  7. Ladderhome greenhouse

  8. Tape Measurehome greenhouse

  9. Squarehome greenhouse

  10. Protractorhome greenhouse

If you buy a garden greenhouse kit, make sure you are buying one that fits your climate, from a company that has excellent customer service so that if you have questions, you have a reliable and friendly source to call.  Also make sure you understand what kind of foundation your greenhouse will need.  Will you need blocks, a cement poured slab, a wood foundation, or something else?  Ask your greenhouse kit rep for tips on what you can do to make your greenhouse more energy efficient – Very important.

  • Is your home greenhouse power supply adequate for your entire growing season?
  • Did you get the right size heater for your home greenhouse?
  • Are you growing in colder months?
  • Do you live in a windy climate?

These questions will help you decide what size and power supply you’ll need when  you build your greenhouse.

Another home greenhouse essential is ventilation – Do you have enough?  Small home greenhouse designs use less, large home greenhouse designs use more ventilation and normally require automatic vents and fans run by electricity.  Greenhouse ventilation works with the sun and keeps plants from getting too hot or too cold.  There are ways to install vents so that they open and close automatically – Some run on electricity, others require no power and can be set up on an expansion rod.

Size really is the determining factor in building a greenhouse.  More and bigger is always better – there will always be that one thing you want more room for and if you have extra space, trust me, you’ll fill it up!

Location – Near your home for easy access to watering supplies and power, and in full sunlight.  And make sure you have room for a second greenhouse – You’ll want another one!  Use the correct Garden Power Tools to Build your Home Greenhouse efficiently.

Fall Garden Planting – September Garden Power Tools Tips

September Garden Power Tools Tips For Fall Planting Success!

Fall Garden Planting – Mid September is the latest you want to plant fall crops.  Garden Power Tools Has This On Good Authority - (September Garden Tool Tips Source:  Charlie Nardozzi, Horticulturist and Leonard Perry, UVM Extension Horticulturist,     “University of Vermont Extension”)

Check out these Fall Garden Tools to make your job easier! For Instance, WORX WG430 13 amp Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder,  And the Fiskars 9405 Kangaroo 30-Gallon Gardening Container pictured here really make leaf clean-up Simple and Easy!
Longer days help those plants transition into the shorter day growing season. Cooler season crops don’t mind cooler temperatures as much as they do the lack of sunlight.

As you empty annual beds this fall, there are two main ways to enrich your soil for next year:

  1. Spreading compost
  2. Planting cover crops

Plant your Cover Crops when your summer garden is finished. Pull out your spent plants, and work that soil.

Add some compost and direct seed beets, chard, Scarlet Nantes carrots and spinach, and much more cooler season crop choices. Transplant your broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, lettuce, and spinach. Give these new plants plenty of water with frequent watering .

Earthwise TC70001 11-Inch 8-1/2 Amp Electric Tiller/Cultivator

Before you spread compost, though, dig or lightly till in any plants that aren’t diseased to return nutrients to the soil. Spread compost, even if it’s not well decomposed yet. It will protect the soil over the winter and break down by spring planting time. Or you can plant cover crops, such as buckwheat or annual rye that will grow this fall and early spring until you till it under several weeks before planting.

Carrot seeds will take longer to germinate than most other seeds. Water carrot seeds twice daily to keep the ground moist. Germinate rates increase if you use shallow planting methods, and cover seeds with a quarter inch of sifted compost.

Fiskars 20-24482 1-1/2-Liter Watering Can, Khaki

Wait until October through January to transplant onion plants, but go ahead with planting your garlic cloves now.

Get those weeds out of your garden or else they will make it doubly hard for you next spring. Since bare soil invites weeds, cover bare soil with mulch, such as layers of wet newspaper covered with straw, compost, or manure.

This will control late fall and early spring weed growth and provide organic matter.

There’s still plenty of time to plant trees and shrubs and perennials, and the prices are right. Root growth will continue into late fall or early winter, and plants won’t have the heat of spring or summer to dry them out.

Be sure to water well at planting time and every week until plants go dormant. Wait to fertilize until spring, otherwise new growth may sprout that won’t be winter hardy.

September Garden Chores also mean taking the fruits of your planting and canning them – When weather temperatures start to fall is a great time to do your canning.

Top best things to can in September are:

  • Tomatoes
  • tomato paste
  • raspberries
  • strawberry Jam
  • blackberry jam
  • (Just to name a few)

Best Herbs:

  • Basil
  • Chives
  • Mint
  • Parsley
  • Rosemary

 - ALL are great planting choices for late summer.

Also think about fast-growing bush zucchini (Depending on how much hot weather you anticipate!) and maybe a few salad greens.

Other suggestions for late plantings include:

  • Kale
  • New Zealand spinach
  • globe onions
  • cabbage
  • radishes
  • horseradish
  • winter squash
  • turnips
  • honeysuckle

Picking Your Landscape Design – August GardenPowerTools.Org Tips

Whether you are selling a home or buying a home or Planning Your Landscape Design, These Tips Work For Anyone

landscape design

landscape designlandscape design
As a Home seller did you know that finding and planting a nice hedge in a visually pleasing area can actually raise the value of your property!  That is just one of the perks of picking a good landscape design for your garden and home.  And on the reverse side of that rock is the fact that a bad landscaping design can lower the value of your property.

Unless you really are amazing at landscape design, the best way to Pick a landscape design will involve hiring the help of a professional.  Because there are so many people in this field, you really want to get someone with:

1) Experience

       AND

2) References!

These two things will make your landscape design tons easier!

There are a couple ways you can save money with your landscape design project.  One is to gather up as many articles on landscape design that appeal to you from magazines, newspapers, DVD, video, books, kindle, website garden stores, neighborhood gardeners, and garden show resources as you can find, assemble them in a design you like and can create and make a landscape do it yourself project one piece at a time.  Make yourself a jigsaw puzzle on your coffee table of appealing ideas and begin.  Start with building structures first and then move onto your planting tasks.

Another way you can accomplish your landscape design goals and save a little money is to section off those parts of your plan that are easiest and hire the more complicated pieces out to a professional.

Once you know what landscape design style you want, you’ll have a better idea of how much things are going to cost, the time you’ll need to get things set up, and material gathering.  Home Designer Landscape & Deck 2012 [Download]landscape design

Here are a few garden landscape design ideas to help you get started:

Desert Garden Landscape Design - Use good sense with plant and shrub choices.  What looks like low maintenance may be costly if you don’t investigate what is natural to your area.  This may require more care in the Garden Landscape planning stages.

Eco Style Garden Landscape Design- Predominately a coastal style with a combination of natural plants and flowers and an obvious concern for water conservation.

English Garden Landscape Design- (cottage garden, country garden) – Primarily the focus of this garden is to blend the two styles – formal and informal.  Plants are often held in check with low lying shrub borders, resulting in a more casual, (or eclectic) effect.

Formal Landscape Design- straight lines and geometrical shapes make up this style with the focus on a more structured organization and appearance.

Georgian Garden Landscape Design- These have a more formal look and feel, with plants  set out in an orderly fashion.

Informal Landscape Design- Curved lines and irregular shapes make up this style with a more natural looking arrangement and appearance.

Italian Garden Landscape Design- There are two types of Italian Gardens.  Old School – Elaborate, lots of watering, rich and diverse in color and variety.  New School – The focus is more on a fresh wild flower and plant appeal, with less need for heavy watering and maintenance.

Japanese Garden Landscape Design- Think dwarf, rock, sand, bamboo, delicate shrubs, symbolic figurines and statues and hanging trees and trellises.  For added authenticity add a water feature with KOI fish.  Think high maintenance landscape design – Had one of these and ripped out half of it after one year.

Mediterranean Garden Landscape Design- These garden styles include Andulasian, French Country, Moroccan, and Tuscan.  Bright colors, infinity pools, outdoor fireplaces, using open spaces to create . . . openness!

Modern Garden Landscape Design- This contemporary garden approach uses lots of straight, clean lines, with plants in groups and fresh new materials used.

Tuscan Garden Landscape Design- A garden style rich with natural wood and steel combinations, for instance wrought iron gates, brick and stone and a castle-like romantic ambience using wooden beams and iron lamps.

Tropical Garden Landscape Design- Jungle-like in appearance, with tallest plants in the back to serve as a backdrop for the assembly of shorter plants and flowers grouped in front.  Look for large leaf plants and brightly colored flowers.

The beauty of planning your garden landscape is that you don’t have to choose just one style.  Depending on your tastes, interest in maintenance, and desire for variety, you can even combine these garden styles to come up with something you absolutely love that is completely unique!

Choose your landscape professional based on how happy their customers are – Ask for references and call those people.  Our neighbor once hired a “Professional landscaper” who hand trimmed every bush, shrub, plant and flower in her yard and then presented her with an amazing bill.  Ask for quotes (estimates and contracts in writing are best – especially if you have problems later) too – Surprises are no fun!

And check with your local areas Better Business Bureau for ANY complaints.

Knowing your garden landscape professional belongs to professional organizations helps too – You want to work with someone who is going to stick around awhile if you have problems or need advice later.

One of the best books on the market for planning your garden landscape is, “The Encyclopedia  of Planting Combinations,” by Tony Lord (Firefly Books).  Some readers find his page layout a little difficult, but we thought it was marvelous!  Lord gives his readers over 4,000 planting schemes, with design ideas for stunning garden combinations from low maintenance to OMG what was I thinking  maintenance!  The helpful photos provide visually what you were trying to picture in your head and for those of us who  have one plant in mind and need help deciding on another for a garden landscape style will have no trouble choosing something from Lords book. Get started picking your landscape design early so that you can take on redesign efforts and composting ahead of time, but early enough for spring flowering and blooming!

July Garden Power Tools Tips-Monthly Tips With GardenPowerTools.Org

GardenPowerTools.Org Tips on Watering Your Lawn – Watering Techniques and Tips

In July, Watering The Lawn, and Effective Watering Methods Are really important because the temperatures often soar.  But is is Gardens and lawns, Decks and Cleaning Tasks are often the primary focus.

Just because there are plenty of things to do doesn’t mean that they all have to get done at once.

Use July to power up your Garden Power Washers and get Decks, Railings, Materials and outside structures cleaned and washed up.

For those months that your grass needs some extra water because it is hot and humid outside do what professionals do.

Set your mower to leave a longer blade.  This longer grass cut in the warmer months helps your grass stay green longer.  This longer grass really gives your lawn a greener look longer because it helps protect the roots and store the soil moisture for a longer time frame.

Brown spots on your lawn can mean dead grass, but a brown lawn can mean something entirely different.  A brown lawn can mean that your grass is in a dormant stage and will return to its lush, green look once the rain returns.

Often these drier months require water rationing and community water shortages, so  go ahead and water yours less, or look for ways to care for and water your lawn more effectively to produce that beautiful green lawn longer.

Some people simply cannot live with that dormant state of their lawn, so they water more regularly.  But, according to garden specialists, you can water your lawn as little as just once a month during the hotter, drier months.

To keep your lawn green longer Tips:

Know what your water restrictions in your neighborhood or city you live in are and investigate lawn sprinkler systems appropriate for your area

Avoid over watering your lawn to prevent the unnecessary growth of fungus and diseases.  The Best way to decide when to water your lawn is to look at your grass. When your grass needs to be watered, it  begins to resemble a blue-gray color, but you’ll also notice that the older leaf blades on plants and grasses begin to curl up or wilt. Check your footprints too – When you walk across a grassy area, your footprints will stay on your grass longer than usual, because your grass will not, ‘bounce back.’

Best time to water your lawn is when 30-50% of your entire lawn shows those signs.

If you only water when your grass really needs it, your grass roots grow deeper.

Use a watering method that takes into consideration these things:

  • Root depth of Your Lawn grass – To determine this either dig a small hole in your lawn to see how far down they go or use an watering estimation based on your lawn grass type – For general purposes, a bluegrass lawn should  allow the water to penetrate the ground approximately 6-8 inches, while most other lawn grasses should use an 8-12 inch penetration of watering.
  • Type of Grass Growing
  • Type of Soil used on your lawn – Soil water absorption level knowledge helps in the decision of how long to water, or leave on sprinkler systems.  For instance, you’ll want to know if you have sandy, loamy or clay soil.

Calibrate sprinkler systems for  higher watering efficiency and maximum water effectiveness.

To Calibrate A Sprinkler System:

  • Get several small and shallow cans or jars that are the same size – Same opening on top as bottom is why cans work best.
  • Scatter the cans around on your lawn
  • Turn on your sprinkler system for 15 minutes
  • Make a measurement of the water collected in each can
  • Determine what the average amount of water is for the watered area – If each can of water measured three inches and you had 6 cans, then your lawn water average over a 15 minute time span is equal to two, or half an inch (3/6 = 0.5 = 1/2 inch water).
  • Find the root depth of your law to determine how much you need to water or leave on your sprinkler system – If you are watering a bluegrass lawn, for example, then run sprinklers for approximately that length of time – No more.  So, if you have a bluegrass lawn and loamy soil, then set your sprinkler system for 30 minutes, this taking into consideration the fact that half an inch of water will penetrate a depth of 6-8 inches of soil – Perfect!
  • Make sure you are watering all areas evenly – Replace and repair damaged sprinkler heads and make sure all sprinkler heads are the same size to ensure even watering levels in all areas.

Calm winds and Cool air are the best climate to water in, which usually means early is best for sprinkler systems – 4:00 am to 9:00 am.  Evaporation and water loss are significantly decreased during these early morning times.

 - Stating The Obvious -

  • Aim sprinklers at the lawn, not the sidewalk or road or house (pool, driveway, outbuildings, garage, sheds, . . . ).
  • Watering in the rain – don’t do it.

If your lawn isn’t absorbing the water quickly you may experience water runoff.  The best way to prevent runoff is to simply shut off your system for  15 to 20 minutes and let it absorb then resume your watering again.

Lower watering costs and water use by using a Rain Barrel is efficient and cost effective.  With the soaring costs of using resources, you’ll be glad to know that the cost of a rain barrel can often be written off in the first year.

Sometimes you’ll have an area or a few areas that need some extra watering attention.  Water cans are the ideal solution for these troubled spots.

Now that you’ve watered the lawn, power-washed the deck and yard area, Fire up the Barbie!

NOW,  go outside and play in the sprinklers!

The Joys of Composting – May Tips From GardenPowerTools.Org

May Garden Tips on Composting, Compost Bins, Safe Composting and Compost Bin Tips

Compost Piles – To Have, or Not to Have – Information That isn’t Full of It!

Composting Gardening Tips For April:

Composting-Bins & Supplies

Do compost piles attract  rats, mice and cockroaches?

  • Yes

Decide what to do about rodents and pests by first asking yourself these questions

  • Is it really a problem for me (and my family)?
  • Can I (and my family) live with rats and mice and other rodents in our compost bins?

How can you tell if you have rats and mice before they become an infestation:

Look for a “three inch diameter” tunnel that is also visible inside your compost bin, disappearing out and down through your compost mix. Sometimes you can’t see the exit/entrance as bin near a stone wall, so maybe you’ll see a similar spray of debris instead. Tunnels appear every now and then, maybe once month.

Rodents make regular forays to the bin for midnight snacks of vegetable peels.

How many babies are in a rat litter?

A rat will have approximately 6-24 babies per (each) litter.  Their gestation period is 3 weeks and they can become pregnant right after giving birth.  Females go into heat about every 5 days, but if placed with a male, that time span is shorter.  Recommended litters are 2-3, but a wild rat has much more litters than 2-3 litter a year domesticated rat.

What to do – Compost Pile Methods & Structures – DIY Composting Ideas & Tips:

You really don’t want rats and mice in your garden as residents with small kids.  Use vermin proof cages with compost piles close to your home or living areas.

A rat tends to bite when it is aggravated, so poking it with a garden fork is not such a good idea, however having a thoroughly aerated compost heap, for instance a design made out of wooden planks with about a 2 inch gap between, but chicken wire is very good, and lots of worms in it reduces the smell and reduces the chances of getting rats.

If you have rats and mice, you might consider buying Decon Rat Killer, or a battery powered pest killer, but the reviews on those aren’t very good, primarily because they are only good up to a certain square footage, otherwise they only chase pest from one spot to another and back again.

Compost heaps which get very warm inside (hedgehogs particularly like to hibernate in them) and the compost supports a lot of food those pest like best.

Compost Advice to help reduce rodent infestations:

  • Buy some sheets of wire chicken mesh – ca 1cm x 1cm squares. Wire over the bottom of your bin – you’ll have to clean and empty it first!
  • Lay down bricks as the floor, flat and on an area slightly larger than the bin, with minimal /no gaps between.
  • Replace bin with wire on it, tucked up around the lower sides.
  • Put more bricks against wire to keep fit snug.  Rats will now give up, even if there is cooked goodies in the bin.
  • chicken wire is the way to go = 100% effective.
  • Rats can chew through wood plastic metal and even concrete. They say sheet aluminum with drilled worm holes is the only guarantee to getting rid of the rats, but the small grid chicken wire works best.
  • build your compost bin out of loosely piled up bricks with lots of gaps for rodents to get out.

Top Composting Bin Ideas Include:

  1.  Use an old carpet tile on top because it is hairy and built with a tough rubbery plastic. This material keeps off the worst rain but holds in the damp. It doesn’t rot and they can be found in pretty much anywhere.  It can mold, however – be wary if you have mold allergies.
  2. Add urine to your heap. It is damp and the nitrogen is essential to degrade the vegetable waste. Horses Urine works best, but if you don’t have access to horses and don’t want to expose yourself in public and IF you have a small child you are potty training then let them loose on your compost pile – Adult supervision required!
  3. Use 2 heaps. One active compost pile and a second rotting compost pile. Turn the active compost heap over to mix the food waste into the cut grass and leaves etc. The two-heap compost mix helps the break-down.
  4. In the summer put BBQ Ashes into your compost heap and water it occasionally.
  5. When it is really cold outside the heap doesn’t rot very well and it can’t build up enough heat through its own rotting, so when it’s winter, don’t worry too much about turning your compost heap over.
  6. Better composters also include a plastic cone buried beneath the composter.  The cone acts as a deterrent to burrowing rodents – at least for awhile.
  7. If you know that the rats are in your compost, then they are less likely to be in your kitchen.   Design a compost heap further AWAY from your kitchen area – 65 meters away from your home is a preferred distance.

 Rats And Mice Carry Disease/s:

Rats around the house or the barn – Wild ones. Leptospirosis is worldwide the
most prevalent zoonotic disease, apart from internal parasites, affecting household pets and humans. Rats are the common urban carrier.

Rats Carry Wiles disease

Garden Organic, previously known as the Henry Doubleday Research Association has a factsheet on rats in the garden:  See it here -
http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/factsheets/gg1.php

Animal Lover Compost Solutions:

Rats are quite partial to remains of the egg white left on the shell.  Leave these out of your compost pile to help reduce your rodent population.

Chicken wire and bricks will work, but difficult to retrofit, so you’ll need to tip the compost base over and do some not-very-pleasant shoveling and then fit heavy gauge chicken wire, with the smallest holes/apertures.

The other thing rats like is an undisturbed heap, as they excavate a cavern. So disturb your heap (not easy with a compost base) and you’ll make it a less pleasant place to live, and they’ll move to a nicer place.

They are also fairly easy to trap or poison, if you must, use an electric mousetrap to be the most efficient and allegedly humane way to get rid of the  mice, or you could just accept that we share this planet with other life-forms.

Compost bins, underneath sheds and decking are prime rodent locations.

Recommended methods are to place patio slabs underneath your bin leaving a small hole in the centre for worms to get in and also to use wire chicken mesh.

Also additionally recommended is lifting your shed and putting slabs under it. Sheds should be high enough for a cat to get in or high enough ( 2/3 standard blocks ) for a rat not to be comfortable.

Rotary bins create good compost, in a few weeks which is so much faster than regular bins.

Is it just rats or do other animals cause problems?

Yes!  Ferretts, fox, cats who dig in things, neighboring prowling animals too, raccoons, squirrels,   hedghogs, . . .

Keep in mind that ONLY rats  kept as domestic pets are clean and cute – Wild rats carry diseases-Bad ones.

Best Composting Practices:  Take Personal Precautions

  • Take precautions when handling anything related to composting
  • Always Wash Your Hands
  • Thoroughly scrub Your fingernails when you finish – Clean your cuticles too.
  • Use a 7 days minimum rule of thumb between composting materials and leaving a rat infected area and proceeding to do anything with your newly planted food, plant, or flower areas.
  • Accelerating the composting in any way you can helps minimize rat and pest infestation and stop the escalation of potential problems.

* Composting Side Note:  *

For those people who believe that we should take steps to preserve, and not eliminate these garden compost pests, I would only ask that you read the information provided on the internet about how rats are credited for the plague of 1665.  On Ask.com, it states, “The plague was caused by disease-carrying fleas carried on the bodies of rats. A pair of rats in the perfect environment could breed many off-spring. The filth found in the streets of London provided the perfect environment for rats.”

The filth in the streets of London was caused from a very hot summer in 1665.

London’s population had continued to grow and many lived in squalor and poverty. The only way people had to get rid of rubbish was to throw it out into the streets. This would include normal household waste as well as human waste. As a result, London was filthy. But this was a perfect breeding place for rats.

Compost piles provide this same kind of environment for rats with fleas.  Many people could not avoid contact with either the rats or someone who had the disease.

Plague symptoms:

1 – Red circular blotches that were found on the skin. These could also develop into large pus filled sacs found primarily under the armpits and in the groin. These buboes were very painful to the sufferer.

2 – People held the belief that the plague was spread by a cloud of poisonous gas that was colourless (known as a miasma). This miasma could only be stopped, so it was believed, if you carried flowers with you as the smell of the flowers would overpower the germs carried by the miasma. There was also another ‘benefit’ to carrying sweet smelling flowers. A victim’s breath started to go off as the disease got worse. The flowers perfume would have covered up this unpleasantness.

3 – The Final symptom was a sneezing fit that was promptly followed by death. Some of the victims did not get as far as this stage presumably as their lives were so poor that their bodies were even less able to cope with the disease. For some, a swift death was merciful.

Once the disease took a hold it spread with frightening speed. Those who could, the wealthy, left London for the comparative safety of the countryside. No such option existed for those who lived in the slums. In fact, militiamen were paid by the city’s council to guard the parish boundaries of the area they lived in and to let no one out unless they had a certificate to leave from their local parish leader. Very few of these certificates were issued.

Poor people cannot afford to fight the diseases spread by these filthy creatures and often children do not have the immunities to fight off the diseases they carry, either.  This is how plagues and illness are carried.  Now how “Cute,” do you really think those critters are – hmmm?

The Pied Piper:

A plague of rats hit Hamelin Town in Brunswick, on the south of the River Weser over 500 years ago.  The mayor, councilmen and town didn’t know what to do

Rats! They fought the dogs and killed the cats and bit the babies. They ate the cheese out of the vats and the soup out of the cooks’ ladles, and made every one very unhappy.

“Bless us!” cried the Mayor, “what’s that? Anything that sounds like a rat makes my heart go pit-a-pat,” he said of the tap at the door by a tall, thin man dressed in a two-colored cape.  He said very politely to the Mayor, “I am the Pied Piper and have a secret charm for all the little animals that walk or creep or swim or fly. I will take the rats away for just a thousand guilders.”

Make March Your Early Spring Lawn Cleanup Task Time

Gardening and Tool Tips For March

March Spring Lawn Cleanup With GardenPowerTools.Org

Make sure your tools are sharpened – Make that your FIRST March Spring Lawn Cleanup Project.  You’ll get a sharp cut on garden living and dead growth and waste without having to hack at anything.

Brown or dead lawn areas need attention now too.  Dig patches up and prepare to re-seed if your freezing season isn’t over yet, or replant dead spots with pre-grown turf.   Uugghh, the dreaded crab grass – March Spring Lawn Cleanup is perfect timing to outwit this devil!  Research what works best for your climate and growing area with your local nursery.

Re-attach anything that has come loose – irrigation pipes, sprinkler systems, water barrels, eaves troughs’ on your roofs on greenhouse, home, tool shed or garden shed.

Removing a tree stump – Pour salt on it until it just goes away (this can take a long time of daily ‘salting’), or have it removed professionally instead of digging it out yourself to reduce lawn damage.

Pressure wash your garden paths, porches, patios, decks and walkways, refill rock or gravel between concrete slabs on paths, patios or walkways, tighten deck screws, repair brickwork or brick walls, trellis and lattices, decking, concrete slabs, or decorative stones.

Repaint fences, re-stain decks, get rid of mold, damaged posts, repair broken fence boards, fence pickets, lattice-work, take care of outdoor wood damage, then wash it well with bleach, soap and water.  If you paint wood and it freezes then add another coat of paint later to give your outdoor wood a better chance to survive throughout the coming months.

Prune away those winter-dead branches to make room for new growth.

Cut back used and dead perennials and pull up old annuals if you didn’t do this chore last fall.  Look around your garden area, plant beds and growing areas.  March Spring cleanup time is the best time to take inventory of your yard and check if it’s time to thin crowded beds and fill in bare spots with transplanting.   Go ahead and get rid of your tree burlap from shrubs and trees when you find that the winter weather is warming up.

Prune dead and useless tree and shrub branches.  Winter weather elements will have taken their toll on these, so prune them right down to the live stems so you have fresh growth ready for new Spring shoots.  Pruning smaller shrubs and branches with hand shears is best, since you get rid of all the excess outer dead-wood that keeps newer blooms from sharing the Fresh air and Spring sunshine, plus it is visually pleasing.  Larger trees overgrown from the Winter months can use the same treatment, but for those thicker branches, use sharper, larger cutting tools and/or saws.

Not all flowering shrubs and trees are equal.  Go ahead with pruning on your flowering plants, trees and shrubs, but hold off for the really dramatic cutting back branches and pruning chores until they flower.   Pruning these too early – before they flower – risks seeing their full potential for beautiful blooms when it is their own blooming season.

Experts agree that flowering perennials are best when they are cut back to 4-5 inches high.  With ornamental grasses, 2-3 inches high is best. Damaged rose canes are best cut back to approximately 1 inch underneath that winter blackened cane area.  Rule of thumb – If it’s dead and black, cut it back.

Divide and conquer over full beds and transplant those  items that over-crowd that area.  When a rose cane looks and feels like wood, it is time to cut it back past that area down to the place where it appears green and healthy again.  Now clean them up and make them look tidy with jute or twine or thin rope, or growing stands, or some of the new fastening devices made out of Velcro fasteners are great too.  Please Use recyclable materials.

Do you have dead leaves and lawn debris that you missed in your fall lawn cleanup – get rid of those things now.  Pull the plants up that didn’t make it through the winter, annuals, dead and used up shrubs and flowering trees too.

Use your organic yard waste to help give your newly cleaned borders and plant beds a fertilization and filter system for the upcoming Spring rain showers.  This is also the time when we either remove and replace, or just remove our existing mulch.  We learned that his step is best when you are most confident that the freezing weather has passed.

Compost Your March Spring lawn cleanup – Be Careful of flowering spring weeds that might wreck your life by growing back in triplicate!  Keep your compost pile moist and approximately twice a month, run a pitchfork through it to keep stench down and compost primed.  Break down branches and leaves – Shredders and mulchers do great work.  If you can’t afford one, go in with a neighbor and share the cost.

If you have more garden and yard debris then you can compost then recycle it.  Check with your local recycling center, garbage delivery, or local nursery to find out what works best in your city.

Yard debris (green waste) includes leaves, weeds, flowers, roots, grass clippings, shrubbery and small tree trimmings/branches less than 4 inches in diameter. Several private compost and topsoil businesses use yard debris from residential and commercial sources to produce high quality compost. Compost is one of nature’s best mulches and soil amendments” (Quoted Information Resource – Solid Works Department: Solid Waste-Yard Debris).
