Gardening Tips For February – GardenPowerTools.Org
February is wonderful for Valentine’s Day, but hard on your garden. This is an off-season month for most things except getting your garden ready for planting.
Although weather is not predictable, you can find inspiration in the burst of occasional sunshine breaking through the clouds, hinting at Spring sunny weather yet to come.
February Is Ideal For:
February this is an Ideal month for pruning everything from trees and shrubs and flowers to ordering bulbs and vegetables for your garden.
February is truly ideal – also, for tending to your garden power and hand tools. Best time to replace or repair, and sharpen garden tools – February
Get Garden Power Tools Ready For Spring:
Take your tools apart – right down to the basic parts – Unscrew them and lay them out by pieces – Don’t be in a hurry, set screws, nuts and bolts aside in a jar or holding container so they do not get lost. If there are several small pieces-label those either on a piece of paper set aside or with tags (we use file folder tags from our office – the colored file folder tags work great to separate and identify small pieces that otherwise may be leftovers).
Start with Garden Hand Tools – Use protective gloves to protect your hands from coming into contact with abrasive materials that may harm you..
Gather your cleaning and sharpening tools: WD-40, steel wool, sharpeners or sharpening stone, clean rags, and mineral spirits.
Get rid of the dirt, dust and rust first – use steel wool on blades. Sap may require some chipping off garden power tool blades but with patience and a chisel, it will start to budge and come off.
Next, use clean rags and mineral spirits for scrubbing your tool blade.
Use long strokes with your blade sharpener for even blade sharpness. Short strokes don’t always start and stop in the same place and blade sharpness may become dull and/or uneven as a result.
Use caution NOT to cut yourself. But, in the event of an unexpected cut, have a clean cloth and band aids nearby – Just in case!

WD-40 not only keeps your doors from squeaking, it helps keep rust away from your garden tool blades – Use clean rags to wipe them (blades) thoroughly with WD-40.
When you aren’t using tools that need sharpening, this step helps keep your garden hand and power tools, “rust resistant.” This step prolongs the shelf life of your garden cutting tools and ultimately saves you money.
Put your tools back together again – Tighten with Power tools if you have trouble tightening things, but not too tight – you’ll want to get them off again to repeat this process, and you don’t want to damage the tool you are cleaning!
February is sporadically rainy and sunny, so be sure you are storing your tools in a clean, dry area or garden tool shed.
A Time For Garden Power Tools and Gardening Research:
Best time to research plant (indoor and outdoor plants both) and garden pests and be prepared for the scavengers that robbed your garden in the previous year – February. Take note of the problems you had last year – now and use those to avoid the same problems in your current gardening year.
